This came out during our discussion with computer science students at quite a few campuses in Bangalore, India. Seems like there is significant amount of development work done by each student over the period of 2-4 years that they are in college. While the initial few may be considered elementary, many others are not and students would love to share some of that work. Today, most of them either end up writing in their personal blogs or just simply don’t do anything about it. Also some of the assignments are done as a group and there are no easy ways to capture the work done by members of the group. Hmm! so we thought why not have a project category focused on student assignment? The rest was easy. Now we have a new project category called ‘Academic’ .
While we were debating about it, another interesting possibility came up. With student assignments getting online, it would now be possible for them to solicit feedback, learn faster, help other fellow students learn from them and most importantly help them build a developer profile while still in college. In fact going back to our discussion with students, some of them expressed interested in having an online profile that can be a ready reference for all of the work that they have done both part of their course as well as personal – open source of course. We would be thinking about this as a feature soon.
