Instant Linux

I recently bought a laptop that came with a pre-installed Vista. While I do use it occasionally for office documents and some online sites which work with IE only I prefer to use Linux (OpenSUSE) largely for other stuff. I have it setup as dual boot but then switching back and forth is still a pain. Tried virtualbox but that kind of makes things slow for the guest even though for general usage it is just fine.

So, I am thinking of a very light weight linux (say puppy linux) which will boot very fast with basic services and then use some virtualization like virtualbox to keep loading the full time operating system in the background. In fact it may just read the state from the disk rather than booting. What are my options to do this?
