New to open source
I am a student in my 2nd year of engineering and new to open source. Can anyone throw me some pointers on how to get started? I am familiar with basic programming and in the process of picking up languages such as C, C++ and a little bit of Java. Even though I have been using windows as a platform , recently I started getting familiar with Ubuntu, Linux.

By sandyNot sure if there is a generic universal answer on how to get started with open source, but best way perhaps is to find a sweet spot that matches your interest, skills you have or are working on. So for example if you are picking up things on C, C++ and also getting familiar with Linux and interested in mobile devices, then perhaps you should check out projects such as GNU Mobile, Android, Moblin and few similar ones. So, if you have an area of interest and not sure about projects to start with, then the likely next step would be to post with your area of interest.

By anshuman.manurInstalling and running a GNU/Linux or any Unix-like system is a great start. You mentioned that you are starting to get familiar on Ubuntu. Try to use it to do everything that you do on windows - play mp3, organise photos etc. Should give you decent amount of exposure. When you're ready for bigger challenges, you could move to Debian, or SUSE, which are harder to configure but have great hack value. Another great way to learn about linux is to try and build your own Linux system - compiling kernels, packaging software etc. will teach you a great deal about Linux. Try Linux From Scratch (http://www.linuxfromscratch.org/), a book on how to build your own Linux system, and configure it to your needs.
In the meanwhile, try to find projects that you like and contribute back - patches, bug fixes, or even documentation.
Good Luck!

By AlexBlrThanks for the inputs. I am getting used to Linux. Are there any suggested projects that would be useful to follow while working on my linux skills? I definitely intend to try out linuxfromscratch to get familiar with the building and compiling part.
